After 126km the path ends in Elster nearby Jessen, where the river flows into the Elbe. You can start your tour at the Geierswalder Sea nearby Senftenberg. The Schwarze Elster flows about 55 km through the Elbe-Elster land. The cycle path also offers the opportunity to get to know many typical villages and towns. The Schwarze Elster originates from the northern edge of the Sybillenstein near Elstra and flows after 188 km downriver into the Elbe.Īlong the path there are some back waters where you can find domestic animals and plants. You will see the changing natural scenery – a mixture of open grassland and forest. The tour leads you directly along the course of the river Schwarze Elster. An important task in the project was to find solutions for the integration of the new, generously designed pens with opening crates into the old stables.Schwarze-Elster-Radweg (Schwarze Elster Cycle Path) Significantly fewer piglet losses were observed in the narrow pen variants. It can be concluded, that pens with a square base and greater space allowance for sows provoke higher piglet losses. Supported by the European Innovation Partnership initiative, 4 variants of pens with opening crates (all crates opened 7 days after farrowing) were tested in 11 trials on one farm, with a special focus on piglet losses during the suckling period.

Opening crates allow sows to move after a short period of confinement post-farrowing, preventing piglets to be crushed and overlayed. In order to improve the animal welfare pens with opening crates should be installed when remodeling the stables.

The farrowing compartments, built according to the former GDR standard, were in need of modernization. The AG Beyern eG has a sow breeding facility.
